A State of Emergency was declared for South Carolina on Wednesday, September 25, in preparation for Hurricane Helene.

Governor Henry McMaster issued the executive order as a precaution against the storm’s potential impacts. Rainfall in the mountains and foothills could exceed six to ten inches, raising flooding risks. The Charlotte Metro area is expected to receive four to six inches, leading to localized flash flooding, while lower totals are anticipated in the Sandhills. Wind gusts may reach at least 50 miles per hour west of Interstate 77, potentially downing trees and causing power outages, with the strongest winds expected Friday morning. Areas east of I-77 could see gusts up to 40 mph.

By Friday afternoon, Helene is expected to move out, bringing drier conditions for the weekend with highs around 80 degrees and lower chances of rain.
