Following Donald Trump winning the presidential election, there has been a spike in requests for birth control and abortion pills.

Additionally, long-term birth control requests, including IUDs and permanent sterilization, have also significantly increased.

Dr. Clayton Alfonso, an OB-GYN at Duke University in North Carolina, said, “I saw this bump after the Trump election in 2016  and after Roe vs. Wade was overturned in 2022. But the patients seem more afraid this time.”

Companies selling emergency contraception and abortion pills are reporting significant surges in demand as people stockpile these medications. One company experienced a 966% increase in emergency contraception sales within 60 hours following the election, compared to the previous week.

Dr. Alfonso added, “ [If the new administration] is not focused on health care right away then I think it’ll go to the back of people’s minds until it picks up in the media.”

In May, Trump told a Pittsburgh television station that he was open to supporting regulations on contraception. However, following media coverage of the interview, he posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, stating that he “has never and will never” advocate for restricting birth control or other contraceptives.
