As the holiday season wraps up, many are wondering how long to leave their Christmas lights up. While there’s no hard-and-fast rule, experts recommend taking them down by early January to avoid potential damage from weather and to maintain neighborhood aesthetics. The National Safety Council suggests removing lights within a few weeks after the New Year to reduce the risk of electrical hazards.

Traditionally, Christmas lights are left up through the Feast of Epiphany on January 6, a practice followed by some who observe the end of the holiday season. However, most people opt to take them down shortly after New Year’s Day to start fresh for the year ahead.

Regardless of when they come down, experts stress that outdoor lights should be inspected for wear and tear before being stored to ensure they’re safe for next season.
