Americans across the nation are marking Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day today, commemorating the life and legacy of the civil rights leader who fought for equality, justice, and peace. The national holiday, observed every year on the third Monday of January, falls on what would have been King’s 96th birthday.

In cities from coast to coast, events ranging from community service projects to marches and ceremonies are taking place to honor King’s message of nonviolence and unity. In Washington, D.C., the National MLK Day of Service drew thousands of volunteers who gave back to their communities.

King’s vision remains a cornerstone in the ongoing fight for civil rights and social equality in America.
