The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education voted unanimously on Monday to approve the first phase of a wage increase plan for classified employees. The move, which brings wages to $20 per hour for many workers, marks the first compensation study implemented by the district in 18 years.
Approved on January 28, the first phase will benefit 4,775 employees in pay grades 1-5, who will see an average raise of 13.9% to bring their wages closer to the market rate. According to WBTV, another 325 workers in higher pay grades will receive an average raise of 8.53%.
The second and third phases of the plan, aimed at recognizing years of service and annual adjustments, are contingent on future board approval and funding. Employees will also receive retroactive pay for hours worked starting July 1, 2024.
