Brittney Griner canceled her speaking engagement at the Women Grow Leadership Summit after receiving a threatening note near her hotel room at the Gaylord National Resort & Convention Center in National Harbor, Maryland.
The note contained the phrase “Gay Baby Jail,” which is commonly used in video games, The Prince George’s County Police Department said in a statement.
“At the time the tape was located, a large convention was taking place at the Gaylord which attracts thousands of people, many with an interest in anime as well as video game enthusiasts.”
Police found no credible leads in the case, attributing the note to the large convention taking place at the hotel.
Women Grow CEO Dr. Chanda Macias blamed the hotel and a previous guest for the incident, suggesting that the room may not have been properly cleaned before Griner checked in.
“We were really excited because she brings a beacon of hope to our industry, but we know security is a major importance,” Macias told WUSA9. “If there was a woman that feels threatened at any reason whatsoever, they should do what they feel is best for them.”
The Women Grow Summit aims to support and empower women leaders in the cannabis industry, addressing challenges and providing opportunities for women in the field.
