A $2 lottery ticket turned into a life-changing win for Hazard Bentley III, 53, who matched five numbers in the December 4, 2017, Lucky for Life drawing to claim a $25,000-a-year-for-life prize.
Bentley opted for a lump sum of $390,000, receiving $271,053 after taxes. According to Queen City News, he said he plans to use the money to help pay for his daughters’ college education and support his family.
Lucky for Life offers two top prizes: $1,000 a day for life or $25,000 a year for life. Winners can choose between annual payouts or a lump sum. The odds of hitting the $25,000-a-year prize stand at 1 in 1.8 million.
Since Bentley’s win, several other North Carolinians—including residents from Concord, Gastonia, Huntersville, and Wendell—have claimed the same prize, proving that sometimes, a small gamble can bring big rewards.
